Things have changed in the universe. There is a strange darkness over the world, and I feel it in the air. All is quiet. I feel the currents of the universe, and they are flowing to a great sea of blood, a crimson tide that I know I will soon be caught up in. I sense one who is fouler than foulness can be—a diseased soul with a mind of pure evil. And rather than dark, I sense light in the enemy. I sense a cruel and vindictive god.

The real motivation for undertaking this project, to praise and extol the virtues of silence, has come from my own personal experience of its many benefits. In gathering material I became aware of two main points: the strong current aversion in our society to silence and stillness, and the extensive commentary on the benefits of silence down through the ages from people of all traditions, east and west. I have explored the nature of silence, how it relates to Communications and Decision-making, the importance of connecting with our inner silence using Meditation as a reference point and examining the creative power of silence as expressed in Music. The great value placed on silence by religious orders is described including how four of the world’s great spiritual teachers; Buddha, Mohammed, Lao Tzu and Jesus all spent considerable time in silence and solitude before emerging to offer their guidance. My role has been to integrate the wise words of others into a cohesive whole so that you can understand better how silence can benefit our lives. May their words encourage you to quietly reflect on their meaning and connect with the ever-present silence..

Life can both be a drama and a comedy. Ingrid’s was a busy life, with its share of adversity. Then one day, feeling frustrated and full of pent-up emotions, she turned on the tap to water the plants in the garden, and a flow of words started pouring out of her. She started writing them down on bits of scrap paper, supermarket dockets, and on the back of envelopes at first. They were words describing observations of self and others, past issues, an affair, a divorce, grief, anger, humor, and some sheer silliness. Some of her skeletons still rattle, but mostly they dance in her cupboard. You may recognize yourself somewhere in the book, or certain words may resonate. No matter how serious life can seem, keep laughing and wondering! Did the garden get watered? Yes.

The biography May’s Story follows the long life of the protagonist, May, who was born in Hawthorn, Victoria, in 1908 and died in Perth, Western Australia, in 2009. Her mother took her not long after her birth back to Wiluna in outback Western Australia, where her father had a gold mine. From there, they went while she was a small child to the Swan Hotel in Fremantle, which belonged to them until 1921. Her father died of the Spanish Influenza in 1919. Subsequently May lived in Swanbourne, then in Victoria before returning to Perth, where she married and gave birth to two children. The biography includes historical events and descriptions of a way of life now lost to memory and soon to be forgotten unless we have written accounts. It is based on the life of a typical Anglo-Saxon woman of her time, with all her prejudices and faults, generosity and strengths.

To the Inuit people, living as they did in the frozen North, life was hard and frugal. They were a deeply caring community, and their families were loving. Tatchatka cared for his family, and he had a deep love for his wife and children. Across the sea, to the West, living on the coast was also hard—hot, wet, and sticky in the summer and very cold in the long, snowy winter. This was not a loving friendly community. Grigor had few acquaintances and fewer roubles. He had heard of a returning ship to a village further north loaded with sea otter furs. He cajoled the men of his village to build a boat and sail to the east. On reaching land, their days were spent killing sea otter and raping Inuit women at every opportunity. Tatchatka and other Inuits were driven to anger and to seek revenge on the intruders.

What is it that seeks prompts people to seek revenge? The causes may be minor or major. Jones’s perceived cause was not life threatening, but his inability to walk properly was sufficient for him to achieve revenge—and he had a long time to think about how to achieve success. His wife welcomed that—it minimized his abuse towards her. Jones’s knowledge of revenge was limited—how to carry it out and avoid being caught. Research at the library helped, but if not successful at first, a further attempt could be made. Any attempt at revenge would mean involvement of the police. A series of events brought him closer to success, and a feeling of exhilaration moved through him as he completed his revenge.

The Ethiopian empire ended with Haile Selassie as the last Negus Negesti, descendant of the Lion of Judah, in 1975 when he was arrested and killed by Mengistu Haile Mariam, a Communist dictator who, in turn, was overthrown in 1990 through uprisings in Eritrea and Wollo/Tigre Provinces. Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba, who the Ethiopian rulers are said to have descended from, was made to promise King Solomon a night of passion if he were able to catch her stealing anything of his, even though she, being a rich ruler, albeit a vassal, had given him so many gifts ( see I Kings ). The myth holds that it was during such a night that the very first ruler of Ethiopia was produced by Solomon and conceived by the Queen of Sheba, whose traditional Arabic name is Bilqis. This story about an unbridled night of passion fleshes out the Ethiopian myth of three thousand years ago and also explains the origin of Ethiopia’s notoriously hot curries. Flavius Josephus, the Judeo-Roman historian, claims that not only were Solomon and the Queen of Sheba a recognized couple but that her empire included, within Northeast Africa, Egypt as well.

The book traces the birth of a baby boy, and tells a narrative about how he grew up, in the days before there were shops, cars, planes and trains, to care about those who were poor, needy and ill, and how the rest of us should share our resources with those less fortunate. I was inspired to write this because I was talking to my daughter about simple ways to discuss good moral values with my young grandchildren. We could find nothing suitable in book stores.
