This book celebrates the life of a flower and it shows how God made a means of escape for her to go into gardens big and small to capture the beauty of nature when there was very little for her to celebrate in her own life. She is a survivor of domestic abuse. As she looks back in time, it is very clear that God anointed her to stay focused on illustrating flowers until an appointed time when she would use these illustrations in her presentation for the job that would forever change the depressing, abusive, and emotionally crippling atmosphere she had endured. She has learned that perseverance, discipline, and devotion do count.

An old, coming apart picture album of the familyset this memoir off. It was my mother’s. Over time the edges turnedbrittle, empty spaces appeared where the glue dried and the snapsdropped out. Or was it anger and petulance that would urge a younggirl, who would be my mother, to tear old boyfriends from their partin her life. Sadly, neither my mother nor anyone else is around topoint out the characters in her early life. I still can recognize somefrom the time we paged the album together. As she mused the pages,tears came to her eyes.

There is one special photo of my grandfather with my brother,Saul, on his lap. In the background, in a field alone is my father in hiswheelchair. He is reading his newspaper oblivious to the picture beingsnapped. I began sketching, using that photo as the jumping off place.I added my mother, my grandmother and myself, in a sailor hatholding a flag, for a full family portrait.

With that simple liberty I was off painting a series of smallcaprices chocked full of the family and friends. The act of paintingdredged up many memories and inspired all kinds of feelings. I tackedthe paintings around the studio and allowed them to play with me.I was provoked to write about each, allowing them to take me onflights of memory, though some recollections do not seem to relate tothe paintings. Memory is triggered by many, and at times seeminglyincongruous things. The paintings do not illustrate the text. The textdoes not give evidence to the paintings. They exist together, membersof the same family. Here they are…all true.
