An Anthology of Growth, Creativity and Mind-Space. ’n Bundel oor Groei, Kreatiwiteit en Kopruimte. An Anthology of Verse, containing verse in the Author’s mother tongue, Afrikaans, and English. These poems are all written in different styles: depicting, in dialogues, monologues, Shakespearean, film-inspired, dream-inspired, dubious, philosophical, impressionistic, and finally (thought you’d never get here!) deeply personal. Intended to accompany the Author’s Honors Art Exhibition, themed: SPACE—in this case, Mind Space. what transpires in our minds, that we cannot express through words? . . . and silently keep it in our own Mind Space . . . sometimes wrongly. Graze deeply, criticize, but know, this is not one perfect specimen, it is snapshots of the same raw Pot, caught in the process of being formed.

This is the true story of my life, born into a family who lived in poverty on the edge of Bristol. In the early 1930s the economy of England started to improve. This improved my life in that I had my own pair of shoes to wear and some new clothes instead of hand me downs but never enough food. I relate some of my experiences as a child and teenager, then my Stonemasonry story. My career in the armed forces in England and Malaya. When I entered the army I was 5foot 4 inches tall. Upon de-mobilisation I had grown to 6foot 3 inches due to being fed properly. I trained as an Alabaster worker and Stonemason. I finally was made the National President of the Association of Natural Stone Industries. This gave me the great honour of sitting down to a banquet with Prince Charles. I also had the privilege of meeting Princess Margaret, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Her majesty our present Queen. During my lifetime I have repaired many grand edifices and many Churches. It has been my good fortune to learn that from Saxon times onwards Stonemasons could do better work when their tools were made for them by Blacksmiths. This knowledge eluded most Masons but helped make me a much respected restorer in all periods of construction. I was appointed a lecturer at Bristol University and the Orton Trust in Northamptonshire. This was my real rags to riches story.

Norfolk is steeped in story. Whether we are travelling along the coast, through the loam-rich farmlands, across the sandy brecklands, among the inland waterways of the broads, or over the marsh and fenlands to the west of the county; whether we are threading the Saxon and Medieval streets of Norwich, Kings Lynn or Thetford, stories are everywhere. These stories that are held in landscape are what the Aboriginal peoples would call the dreaming of a place. When they are told the sleeping landscape reveals its dreams. Its secrets are disclosed. The medium is the breath the spoken and the sung word. In this exhibition the narratives of place are returned to the bedrock of landscape. Breath is become stone. The chisel leaves traces in the stone in the same way that the blade of the plough furrows the field or the birds foot marks the mud but it carries with it traces of the voices of our ancestors, engrained fragments of ancient stories. Visit the Engrained voices website to find out more.

Ever since Boy Scout days Roger Legg has obtained great pleasure from long-distance walking. On the whole he does not like following footpath routes designated by Acts of Parliament, nor following books of instructions on how to get from A to B ... proceed for one mile; turn left at the farm gate; be careful of the marsh at the bottom of hill ..... It all sounds a bit like joining the army and often fails to get the walker off the beaten track. Rather he prefers to plan his own route, to use map and compass. This book is a record of six journeys which he made in the British Isles during the years 1980 to 1991. He hopes the reader will enjoy his adventures; as that great walker George Borrow said many years ago: ..... these British Islands ... where more strange things are every day occurring, whether in road or street, house or dingle

These are The Cheeksters and this is how they all came about... I just wanted to give you a little history on them. This idea was first conceived when our son Jimmer was born back in 1989. My other son TJ was 7 at the time and when we brought Jimmer home, TJ was intrigued by the cheeks that Jimmer had and commented about them frequently. One day, because TJ knew that I liked to dabble in making different craft items, he said to me Mommy you should make a doll that looks like Jimmer with his big cheeks, then you can call them The Cheeksters. Well at the time I just laughed and said it was a cute idea but didnt really consider something like that until years later when Jimmer was about 5 or so and he still had those cheeks! I decided to give it a try just for fun because I really enjoyed trying to create things. They first started out as a sock that I stuffed with cotton and drew a face on them. Then I decided that I wanted to put his big feet on them too so then the doll looked like a face with big cheeks and big feet (if youve seen Jimmers size 14 feet youll know why I wanted to add those on to the doll) and of course we used TJs idea for a name and called them The Cheeksters. The difference of how they looked back then and how they look now is how far Ive come at perfecting them just the way I wanted them to look. When we started we thought of 7 different characters. They were Jimmer Jammer, (of course for baby Jimmer), Talented TJ, Lovely Lindsay, Mischievous Michael, Sweet Suzy, Neat Ned, and Rapper Roberto, . When my son TJ was in high school and I had revisited the idea of trying to do something with the Cheeksters, I asked him to write a little poem that went along with each of those. Then we added Messy Marvin, Cool Calvin, Moviestar Monica, Curly Q Carla, and on and on. I probably have about 20 or 30 characters now and the sky is the limit with them. Finally I decided to write a series of books about The Cheeksters. The main character is Jimmer Jammer and the title of the books will be called The Jimmer Jammer Stories with stories about the Cheekster characters. The stories will have a moral theme to it with Jimmer Jammer giving some advice to the young readers at the end. My son Jimmer didnt even know that I was working on these books. He knew of the Cheekster dolls that I had all over the house during his growing years, but didnt know about the books. I recently showed them to him. He approved and hopes that they do well. So we hope that you and your children enjoy them.

The whole point of this book is simply to show another approach to doing Model Trains. Instead of a board with an oval and few switch tracks, you can do much larger while taking up less space. And you can create and not be limited. My model trains mostly sat in boxes until I did what I showed in this book. And the hobby was then no longer a toy and a lot more fun after that, and I am never going back. Thank you for reading,
Mike J. Scheerens
