The progressive thinning of female representation as one advances from teacher through the higher levels of administration, is an interesting phenomena in a field that is dominated by women at the teacher level. The question becomes, “Why do only a few female teachers progress to administrative positions particularly to the level of district superintendent?” Ladies Who Lead investigates this issue and takes a closer look at several female superintendents who have broken through the glass ceiling to advance to the level of superintendent. As one reader points out, “After reading this book, I feel like I can do anything or overcome any obstacle as a woman.” (Olivia Coker)

This book provides that in a provocative but practical way – as only the virtuoso executive coach and consultant Lee Thayer could do it.

There have been many thousands of books and seminars on the subject of leaders and leadership over the past few decades. Most make no effort to explain that leadership is amoral. It is a power over others that can be used for good or for ill. People are subjected to all kinds of abuse by their “leaders” – organizationally, politically, and as children being poorly “led” by their parents and teachers. The original concept of leadership was that it would be used for good purposes – that those who purported to be “leaders” would have virtues that would necessarily be good for people, for their communities, and for the larger culture. This is obviously no longer the case. There has been plenty of talk about “successful” leaders. But “successful” leaders are not necessarily GOOD leaders. Merely “making the numbers” or being successful in some quantitative way does not imply good leadership. This book, which has already attracted wide attention because it is so outspoken, unpacks the concept of leadership. Once one knows how to do this, indentifying the good from the bad becomes much easier. The benefi ts to all of us as individuals and to the world we all share can be remarkable. It is time to stop idolizing our “leaders.” It is time to call them to task. It is time to help them become what they should be. The Good Leader can do this for them – and for you.

Psychology and social science practically ignored “cool” as a legitimate topic of research. While in fact, the occurrence of cool has played an important role in the historical, social and cultural development of Black people, especially some Black males. Some Black male businessmen use cool behaviors to fight against stress caused by meaningful life supporting social, economic, political, and business issues.
Coolposing is a leadership strategy based on African cultural elements of communicative individuality and mysticism, emerging from influences of “cool pose.” It is a part of character, and character is the representation of one’s self in everyday life. It is a positive response by America’s Black males (and not niggas) to alienation, lynching, and loss of community grounded in the coolness of the first group of captured, yet resistant Africans, who arrived at Jamestown, Virginia in 1619.
Within this book, readers will learn all about this often ignored subject, its central elements, and the nine kinds of “cool.” Coolposing proposes a major shift for the best mental, spiritual and physical health of Black males and prescribes measures for crisis intervention, as well as for preventing mental burnout.
