By Sue W. Kramer

“Domestic Violence: The Circle Called Love” takes an in-depth look at domestic violence and partner abuse in today’s society. Based on Sue W. Kramer’s 1998 award-winning newspaper series, “In the Name of Love,” “Domestic Violence” examines abusive relationships from several viewpoints including those of the responding police officer, the victim, and the abuser. Utilizing the victims’ own horror stories, case studies, police reports, and domestic violence statistics, it takes a comprehensive look at the abusive relationship and sheds new light on the behaviors that define domestic violence. This unique view of the abusive relationship and the far-reaching analysis of the behaviors of the abuser will not only enhance the understanding of domestic violence within professional circles, but help the lay person, and the victims of domestic violence in particular, recognize and understand the intrinsic behaviors that shape domestic violence.

A Hustler’s Girl (Prisoner In Her Own Home) tells how a good girl went bad when a teenage love affair quickly spirals out of control. The young lady that we are calling Shenelle met & fell in love with Sean (a known neighborhood drug dealer) & was instantly blinded by gifts.

Things change & take a turn for the worse when Sean is released from prison & instead of looking for a job he starts neglecting his responsibilities. Shenelle (now pregnant & struggling alone) is the head strong no nonsense type but it wouldn’t be that easy for her to walk away instead she becomes a prisoner in her own home...

I always said that it is easier for a man to leave a woman than it is for a woman to leave a man...

Surviving the Spider’s Net

This book is divided into five sections. Section one deals with the early years of Emilia’s life and gives us some background about her parents and grandparents. It shows how Emilia is setup for accepting an abusive relationship. We are also introduced to epilepsy in this section.

Section two begins with George kicking his wife Emilia out of a car on a major freeway. The three daughters, Nicole, Leah and Yenta have decided reactions to the treatment their father hands out. Abuse will colour their relationship with men throughout their lives. The following problems that occur and the manner that they are dealt with set the tone for the book. George and Emilia continue to waffle between understanding and denying their abuse. She gives him every opportunity to mend his ways. Women who are abused sometimes do not know any other life, and their self-esteem is quite low.

Section three continues with therapy for the entire family. Emilia begins to do more things that she wants to do and develops her self-esteem. Also included in this section are problem teenagers actions in reaction to parental abuse.

Section four deals with drugs, abuse and abortion.

In Section five, Emilia finds a person who loves her for herself. She loses him to Parkinson’s disease, but remains a stronger individual for his friendship.

I am concerned that the first chapter is too strong. There is a great deal about Emilia´s her mother and grandmother’s lives crammed into the first chapter. Yet, I saw no other way to get the material into the first of the book aside from putting it there. Other areas, I have used flashbacks between Liza, her therapist and Emilia to tell the story of abuse that goes rampant throughout the book.

Suzy Conner had always been told that elephants don’t forget. Even if you are given shock treatments your memories do come back. Fifty years later, was she losing all hope and faith in God? “No, I cannot lose my faith in you, Lord, You got me this far.” “Go for a walk, Suzy.” Throwing her camping gear in the trunk of her car, she drove until the car was out of gas to a forest path in Tennessee where she found a deer that guided her way. This is Suzy’s story of coming back confronting herself, the past trials, tribulations, and her own faith in God who had fed her Tidbits of info and knowledge over the last fifty years so she would have the wisdom to battle to keep her sanity and not lose it this time like she did when she was a child. The title Elephants and Me is based on truth: I have always wondered does that make me part elephant, because I couldn’t forget either.
