Why would a beautiful, seemingly healthy and happy child, who does very well in school from kindergarten through 8th grade, suddenly become totally derailed at age 14, and spend the rest of his life employing his considerable resourcefulness and intelligence to defy all the rules of common sense and “normal” living to follow some undefined vision of personal “freedom”?
In an ultimately unrewarding battle of wills, this mother-son relationship travels a rocky road of sharing and silent withholding, caring and indifference, loving marred by episodes of helpless anger, frustration, disapproval and despair.
The love survived. The sense of loss will never go away.

By Carol-la Sonam Dorje
The book of poems sometimes came to Carol-la between sleep and wakefulness, to create order out of the chaos of life. Many are of love, loss, mourning, melancholy and the pain of grief and redemption. As the grief process ebbs and flows, it is leavened with growth, hope and joy and sustained by the spirituality of Taos Mountain and Tibet. Carol-la began to reconnect with the world and find meaning. It speaks of the Tibetan Sky Burial ritual and of the veil between living and dying.

By Carol-la Sonam Dorje
Since Carol-la’s first book, Ode to Peanut M&M’s, Carol-la continues to meander through the ruins of her memories and it is a bittersweet surrender. At times, Tibet is fresh and untouched by forgetfulness. A recent trip to Ireland was beckoned by a leprechaun, who met Carol-la on a Sky Burial site in Tibet, before she met Tsedor-la. Her poetry writing is her means to pursue the unknown and make it visible. She speaks of her path between the veil of living and dying and transcending grief. Her book is a legacy of who she is today.

Where Angels Walked is the story of Jenny Goolsby, a beautiful baby girl born with hemangioma. Through her parent’s faith, the support and prayers of a loving family, husband, and community, and the strength of her spirit, Jenny overcomes physical limitations to achieve personal and business successes. Most importantly, she reaches out to everyone with love, even in the midst of her own strife. Although despair could have been Jenny’s story, she chose to pen her life with faith—faith bright and beautiful. A unique challenge for its author, Where Angels Walked chronicles the extraordinary defeats and triumphs of Jenny’s life, offering assurance and courage to those who have suffered with and lost a loved one. Jenny demonstrates with her life that it is through weakness that God’s strength can shine through. In riveting detail, Ms. Verble writes eloquently her memories of Jenny: girlhood pretending and playing; moments of utter despair and hopelessness; and Jenny’s persistence to live life fully time and time again. She describes how they helped each other in life; their marriages and the children they shared; the family dinners and gatherings; and the constant stream of the love that flowed between these special, angelic sisters. Tragically, Jenny’s life is shortened following a diagnosis of colon cancer. Not only does the family lose their beloved sister; they lose Dewey, Jenny’s devoted and loving husband. To add to this heartache, all of Jenny’s possessions are lost, never to be cherished by her family. The combination of losing Jenny and what she created and worked for brought much sadness and grief to Georgia. The author began writing to explain her heartaches and her personal journey from taking full responsibility for her sister’s death to final complete acceptance of it. After 10 years of writing, Where Angels Walked has been published. This emotionally compelling personal story raises many spiritual questions about life, illness, death, and finding peace in the midst of personal nightmares. The pages are filled with detailed memories and the story contains laughter and surprise, suspense and drama, sorrow and pain; but most significant, the assurance of God’s steadfastness to his beloved children. Ms. Verble gives freely of her memories, ideas, and feelings. Follow Jenny and Georgia’s journey from despair to joy, back to despair, and finally to joyful acceptance of God’s plan. Where Angels Walked is difficult to put down and impossible to forget.
