A very helpful, caring and needed approach. In our more than 20 years of consulting to stepfamilies we see that people need to see what others have done, and thus “normalize” the problems which seem unique to them. Elizabeth Marietta has accomplished this expertly. Jeannette Lofas, PhD,CSW President and Founder Stepfamily Foundation www.stepfamily.org Children’s lives are greatly complicated in these days when they are rushed back and forth between households. Any and all books that can contribute to the education of parents on how to deal with the feelings of a child who is living with two families, or living with stepparents, will assist our society to cope with our new family structures. This book can greatly assist all parents to understand the needs of their children. Children belong to all of us as a community. Yvette Torell Filmmaker – Director - Just Mom and Me Elizabeth’s’ book addresses the thorny issues that can side track and promising relationship. Read it! Joe Jablonski Author – Single Parent Elizabeth Marietta presents an interesting glimpse into the experience of stepparenting. With the nuclear family becoming only one of the myriad of family types today, Marietta’s book will allow for support and reflection for others in similar positions. The reflections on the interviews are insightful for the lessons they may provide for others facing the same issues. Marietta’s book will surely be of interest for many families of all types. Gabrielle C. Burton Filmmaker – Five Sisters Productions Becoming a stepparent soon? Or as a stepparent, have you already been challenged in this most difficult of family relationships? Ricochet Stepparenting will help you become a better stepparent, a more confident one with the ability to solve common problems facing stepparents including issues of disciplining and dealing with the other parent. Unlike how to books, this book is a compilation of interviews with stepparents who have confronted these issues and problems and are willing to share their knowledge and wisdom gained through sometimes painful experiences. Please read Ricochet Stepparenting. Heather K. McCune, M.D. Family Physician Santa Monica, California In my role as principal of an elementary school, I observe the dynamics of the family structure and its impact on children. Parents and children in the process of becoming a blended family need support. Ricochet Stepparenting offers assistance that is intelligent, practical, bu5t compassionate. Marietta’s book is a valuable asset to our school’s parent education collection. Marcia Gregor Garrick, ED. D. I have been through it twice. It is a worthwhile, but Elizabeth’s book would have made it easier. John Garrick Stepparent I applaud Ms. Marietta in writing a book, which reaches out, to so many people in a practical and helpful way on an issue of much importance. In The Intentional Father, the author chronicles the significant events in his decision to become a single adoptive parent and the adoption process. An essential and moving read containing parenting and legal advice for those who are considering becoming an adoptive parent. The central theme and heartfelt message is to never give up the dream of becoming a parent. The author’s sense of humor and knowledge about the legal process and his own experiences adopting twice intertwine to make this an essential read for those who are parents, or are thinking about becoming an adoptive parent or for those who need proof that there is there is strength in compassion, lessons in adversity and power in perseverance; truly a message of hope. Excerpt from “The Intentional Father” In the initial visit with my son, I witnessed a child who was bright, smiled, yelled, stomped his feet and screamed. It was not that he could not talk, he would not talk. He had his own language, created in his mind to get his needs satisfied as a result of them not being met prior. I was told that he could only say 7 words, all in Spanish. I went to a corner on this initial visit and sat there with a book and a stuffed bear and waited. Ever so slowly, he approached me, would touch me and run away and giggle. Eventually, he sat in my lap and looked at me for a while, with his social worker, the foster mother and my adoption worker looking on he put his hand on my face and said “daddy.” This was not one of the words that he knew and it was not in Spanish . . . so it began.

Follow my journey from joy to despair and back to joy. It was 1986. I’d been a single mother for five years, super-bonding with my daughters Emily and Elizabeth, ages twelve and six. I was a school librarian, taking courses toward administrative certification. I had good friends and a social life of sorts. I swore I’d never marry again. Enter Dan, recently separated with two young sons. Romance and passion exploded and we became a Brady Bunch family. Then the Northwest Flight 255 crashed outside Detroit, and my world fell apart. Building another life was my biggest challenge.
