What do you do when your medical doctor tells you that you have a terminal illness and to go home and die- there is no cure? The book explains Eric’s reaction and successful fourteen-year survival. The purpose of this book is to provide information and inspiration to other people with ALS. However, the abundance of accumulated information has application to almost any illness. We live in an extremely polluted environment. Yet most people do not relate their illness to toxic pollution. Therefore, they fail to do anything about it. I have been told and have read in much of the literature I have received since April 2002 that each person´s experience with cancer is different. Each approach to treatment is different. Each person´s reaction to treatment, different. Anyone you stand next to, anywhere, will be different from you, even an identical twin.

I am writing here from my perspective and experiences. I am as different and as the same as the next person. We all share some common ground. Certain experiences will be similar. But still, we are unique. Each of us.

What I share here may touch a chord with you. It may speak to you. It may cause you to think you really are different and have you questioning why you´re reading this book at all. It doesn´t matter. I´m putting it all out on the page to share it. You are not alone...

In all the literature I was given to read, I didn´t come across one piece, other than a short magazine article, that opened up the doors of a person´s mind and heart and laid it out to share with others.

Knowing, intrinsically, it wasn´t true...I still felt alone.

I´m hoping that in reading this, one person will be touched positively and will be able to grasp something that will empower them, give them strength, and even peace. If I can do that by the sharing of the months with my unwanted visitor I will feel honored.

What's a Body To Do? The Breast Cancer Case Manager is part personalnarrative, part resource guide, part personal organizer and workbook. It'sdesigned to help newly diagnosed women start coping with their own cancertreatment.

Written by a writer who was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma shortlyafter her 49th birthday, the Case Manager contains all the useful advice andinformation she received from the people she met on her own journey throughCancerland: doctors, nurses, cancer counselors, social workers, support groupmembers.

The Case Manager is organized chronologically, covering diagnosis, surgery, treatment, dealing with health plans, managing mental health, what it means tobe a "survivor" and more.

The key chapters break down into two parts: first the humorous/ironic taleof the author's own experience with highlighted "tips" along the way,and second the "personal organizer." The organizer contains:

  • annotated resource sections containing a selection of books, groups and Internet sites that provide reliable information without being overwhelming
  • suggested questions to ask doctors
  • diary pages
  • master appointment record
  • address book
  • place to record pathology and test reports
  • chemo and radiation "symptom journals"

The organizer provides the patient a way to keep all her"information" in one place, in a format compact enough to take alongwhenever she goes to the doctor's office.

The narrative is filled with humor--if not exactlylaugh-out-loud-so-hard-till-you-cry funny, at least smile-in-understanding,wince-with-the-irony funny. Why? Because studies show that a good laugh istherapeutic, not to mention a very practical defense mechanism that can helpanyone get through the terrible and terrifying experience of breast cancertreatment.

Despite the hundreds of books about breast cancer on the market, no otherbook is a case manager. No other single book provides the breast cancer patienta pre-packaged personal organizer to manage her own treatment -- so importantwhen a woman is faced with the myriad, new and often bewildering details ofbeing a cancer patient.

The goal of What's a Body To Do? The Breast Cancer Case Manager is tomake it easier for women to take back control of their lives and manage theirown, unique treatment. Knowledge is power, and the Case Manager provides womenthe launching pad from which to acquire it.

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis Builds Hope is written by a person who has lived with this destructive, confusing, often frustrating and frightening illness. When Carol was diagnosed in 1974, little was known about the disease, let alone a cure. While there is still no cure for MS, several disease modifying treatments that are partially effective for most people with MS are currently available.

This book attempts to explain how the immune system damages the brain and spinal cord and the processes involved in the destruction of nerves. A comprehensive list of her research includes: MS symptoms, new and current treatments, gender hormones, genetics, stem cells, MRIs, and types of MS…points covered include:

• How the damage in MS as well as other autoimmune diseases occurs
• Function and structure of myelin, the covering of nerves
• New understanding of myelin and nerve fiber damage in MS
• Current research on repairing nerve damage that causes MS symptoms

People with MS often wonder about the answers to the following questions:

• Will there be better MS treatments?
• When will they become available?
• Will there be treatments for people with severe neurological damage?
• Will I ever get back to normal?

Of course, no one can answer these questions definitively. This book attempts to provide people with information about the new wave of treatments that show promise to slow or stop the progression of MS.

There are now new techniques for diagnosing this disease. Better research tools and understanding of damage caused by MS will lead to more effective treatments.

An expert neurologist stated: “The best way to bring issues to the attention of the physicians is to educate the patient.”
