In Nazi occupied Austria, two young people commit a capital offence; they fall in love. The Courtship of Julian & Frieda is the true story of a young couple who develop an extraordinary bond. In the old-world splendor of a remote mountain estate, a wealthy girl and a poor boy are thrown together by circumstance. An unsuitable match by the standards of the day, these two congenial young people would soon realize a regard for one another strong enough to defy any proscription.Although they are both unmarried Catholics, the Nazis have decreed any relationship between an Austrian and a Pole to be strictly forbidden. The couple meet in secret; for a year they successfully elude detection until, in the summer of 1941, they are betrayed. Arrested and sent to Gestapo headquarters, they face the implacable savagery of Nazi “justice.”The Courtship of Julian & Frieda is a story about destiny, tyranny and the power of true love; a factual account of two unworldly young lovers who, through sheer luck and unselfish devotion, overcome unimaginable odds to be together.

Tini’s People is a true story about real people, her memories of Jews, Poles, Czechs, Germans and Austrians all of whom she thought of as “ her people ” form the backbone of this book. The book provides a historical, cultural and social perspective on the life of a Central European Jewish family from the 1820’s to end of the Holocaust in 1945.
Tini was the youngest daughter of a traditional Jewish family. After her arranged Jewish marriage failed she married Willi, a Roman Catholic, the first mixed marriage in her family as well as the first such in the town where they lived.
In the 1930s growing anti-Semitism emanating from Germany culminated in the occupation of the Czech lands. Under the Nazi Race Laws Tini’s mixed marriage initially provided her with immunity from persecution, however, her name was eventually placed on a deportation list. Willi foolishly talks about his Jewish wife with a total stranger, Bernhard Asmus, only to discover that he was confiding in a high-ranking member of the Gestapo. Asmus unexpectedly promises to help and issues them travel passes to the small country village where he had found them a safe place to stay. Nicknamed “ The Jewish Father “ by the local populous, Bernhard Asmus risked not only his own life but also the lives of his wife and son by helping Protestants, Catholics and Jews alike.
Tini survives the war - a woman left behind to mourn the deaths of those she loved, including her beloved daughter, Hedy. All of them were innocent victims, first incarcerated and then exterminated in Nazi death camps.
While reminiscing about her people only once did Tini say of those Germans who complained of their treatment in the post-war years – “ Perhaps they brought it upon themselves when they chose Adolf Hitler to be their leader! ”

A visit to Eastern Europe in the spring of 2007 had a profound effect on Linda Dubin Garfi eld, printmaker/mixed media artist. The idea for a series of work based on her trip was born in the narrow streets of Prague,in the rolling hills of Hungary and in the darkened cells of Terezin. Who could not know what washappening? Who could not see what was going on? What illusions did people accept to mask the Holocaustthat was happening outside their windows? Didn’t people wonder where the Jewish people went whenthey disappeared? The artist’s series Behind the Scene/Seen deals with the issues embedded in this landscape:reality/illusion, past/ present, and history/future generations. The voice of my brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.Genesis, 4:10

By Hannah Naiditch
Memoirs of a Hitler Refugee is a riveting account of Hannah Naiditch’s unforgettable odyssey—from her tranquil childhood in Vienna, to her miraculous escape from the Nazis, to her politically active life in America. Learn how Hannah endured early separation from her family; harrowing nights spent in London’s underground subway tunnels, as Germany ruthlessly tried to bomb England into submission; and the challenges of starting a new life in America. Hannah’s unconquerable determination is moving and exceptionally inspirational. Hannah’s astute psychological observations offer a unique perspective of life and culture in twentieth century America and Europe. She explores the haunting question – what makes a Hitler and could it happen here? During a time when women had limited political expression, Hannah’s experiences led her to a life dedicated to political activism—challenging the core foundations of American domestic and foreign policy with her many influential and controversial articles. These political op-ed articles form a fascinating appendix to her book. What makes this book extraordinary is the beautifully worded narration, the sharply intelligent observations, and the author’s unyielding determination to thrive as a human being. Memoirs of a Hitler Refugee embodies the triumph of an indomitable spirit. BOOK REVIEWS "The memoirs of Hannah Naiditch represent an important page in our cultural history. Writing from the perspective of a richly lived professional and personal life, she documents the tragedy of a despotic time and the triumph of a personal spirit. What she shares of her life must not be forgotten, or, poignantly misremembered. She has the capacity of putting into perspective the crisis of the mid-twentieth century. Hannah Naiditch is a survivor, but more, she has retained the vision necessary to overcome sentimentality for the portraiture of displacement and dislocation. Her story is a remarkable one and worthy of a greater public." Lee H. Roloff, Ph. D. Professor Emeritus Northwestern University "Hannah Naiditch´s columns are excellent. They are strong, honest and eloquent." Howard Zinn "Hannah Naiditch is an event. A little old lady who has been boiled down to the purest essence of strength and intelligence. Any who choose to tilt in logic and reason with her, had best rethink their fatal flaw. She will always enlighten and reward any listener. Heed and grow." Ed Asner

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
When the book arrived; I opened it immediately and read for a straight eight hours.....cover-to-cover nonstop. To me it was a "page turner", and with a reading glass to boot. I think Pieter has created a masterpiece......he tells a story that, as far as my past reading on WWII goes, has not been told before. I have only known Pieter professionally. I had no idea how much he suffered in his youth. Clearly it made his soul stronger........the title is well chosen. —David Beaubien, Retired Sr. Vice President of E.G.&G., Inc.
I finished your book last week and believe me, I wasoverwhelmed by it. It brought back so many memoriesand I used to wonder if the government made some of itup, but they could not do justice to it like your bookdoes. I am so glad you put it down into a book. I hopesomeone puts it into a movie. Your bonding with Aaronvan den Berg was so touching. I had tears in my eyes. You certainly are very versatile. So many differentcareers in one lifetime. Thanks for a wonderful andinformative book". —By Joan Fetterman

By Gert Koppel
On a winter day in 1939, eleven-year-old Gert and his sister Ilse board a train from Hamburg to Antwerp to flee Nazi Germany. Not only must Gert leave his parents, but he must also abandon a childhood shaped by the rich traditions of a large family. In Belgium the Nazi racial laws seem remote at first, yet after Germany invades, Gert and Ilse are in great danger again. Now they must perform . . . a Vanishing Act! Gert Koppel was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1927. This is his story of persecution and survival, separation and reunion, narrow escapes, lasting friendships, and ultimate freedom. He describes vividly, from a child’s perspective, descent into the horrors of Kristallnacht and the Holocaust, fragmentation of his close-knit family, exposure to Christianity, courage of the families who shelter him, and his joy when the Allies liberate Belgium. A Vanishing Act spans the years 1933 to 1944. The first-person coming-of-age narrative is interspersed with historical background and family photos. A Vanishing Act is appropriate for middle school readers but is also intended for adults who can learn from one man’s experiences and personal triumphs over great adversity.
