The life of a teenage girl is full of drama. Contrary to popular belief, drama isn’t always “all that.” Alexis, Bonita, Courtney, and Deidre pinky pledge to survive it together as they head into high school. Friends since elementary school, reared in the church, they learn the hard way what life is like outside of the rules, hidden in secrecy. Alexis is the studious one whose leadership skills and popularity have landed her in many top roles within her community, church and school. She is the smallest, smartest, and strongest of them all, or so they thought. Bonita is the bubbly, social butterfly who is naively blinded by the love of her life, Cedric. She is the one that always keeps it real, except when it comes to her own issues. Courtney is the level-headed one who is focused on her academic, athletic, and musical goals. She whole-heartedly follows the spiritual wisdom and guidance of the woman who raised her, her grandmother. While Deidre is the sophisticated one, a fashionable cheerleader who has her daddy wrapped around her finger, and keeps her mother at arm’s length away. Together, these teens eventually learn that even when times get tough and ugly, when life can’t possibly get any worse, strong relationships with friends and family can and will overpower any drama.

This book is an all-American, Southern way of living with best friends, teenagers and babies, Although struggles make us stronger, you have to know how to pray your way through life. Without it, I think a lot of us are left empty-hearted and an emotional mess, so to speak. We would all love to live in a “make-believe world” where everything was always perfect and where girls play with their baby dolls and boys with their cars and trucks. But it doesn’t work that way in real life. Baby dolls become real babies, and trucks become real objects. They both require a lot more of attention from us. We can’t just put them in a closet or toy chest whenever we feel tired of playing. This book is written with the best intentions of coaching girls and boys alike into the research of life and how it’s made. It also is written with the utmost respect for parents or single parents and the importance of staying in tune with your teenager, to always keep their confidence level lifted high. Sweet Memories by Candice J. Shipley
