Our detective is April Gladstone, Miss Firefly, a 15-year-old “little person” who yearns to leave the world of circus “freaks.” When Delilah, the star attraction of Captain Barney’s Circus, tumbles to her death from a tightrope, the suspicious Firefly sets out to investigate. She soon discovers that in Captain Barney’s Circus, things are not as they seem. This tale, set in 1889, in the time of the famous Jack the Ripper murders, is a sweet, quirky story that provides an exotic glimpse into the world of Victorian San Francisco’s Barbary Coast and the harsh, gritty world of the traveling circuses and freak shows.

Within a child’s mind is found a creative world where stars glitter endlessly, the moon is forever full, water can run uphill, the sun can shine by the mere snap of a finger, birds soar among the clouds, and magic is very much alive. Within each of us dwells the child we once were. The innocence of that precious time remains, never to be forgotten but only if we truly let ourselves touch the young mind that once sang, laughed, and played. ‘Young Minds’ is a collection of short stories contrived from memories and fantasy, and written for the imagination of the young, and the young at heart. Within the pages of this book Ms. Blackwood touches the child within herself, bringing memories alive to once again flourish, and strive. She invites you to take the journey with her, and let the child in you be free.

Out on the edge of Pencil Point, there is a house that has so many rooms in it that nobody knows how many rooms there are in it, nor what, exactly, is in each room. Since The Owners of the house spend all of their time creating the inventions that fill the rooms, they hire Mark and Theresa´s parents to maintain the living quarters of the house for them. When Mark and Theresa accompany their parents to the house, the children are expected to help them do small jobs, or, if there are no small jobs, just stay out of the way. What happened one day revealed something entirely unexpected; for, in this house, amazing adventures beyond their wildest dreams await them. On this day, Mark and Theresa accidentally released Bungee, Mark´s dog, into the halls of the hidden rooms. Mark and Theresa chased after Bungee and discovered rooms full of wonderful surprises. In one room, Mark and Theresa were transformed into different creatures and funny objects. In another room, their tongues rejoiced at the delicious delights they devoured there. Bungee continued to lead them through the hallways until they found a playground unlike any other Mark or Theresa had ever encountered before. The children had so much fun chasing their dog through the rooms that the entire day had passed and it was time to go home. Who knows what wonders lie ahead of them the next time Mark and Theresa roam the rooms of the house on Pencil Point?
