All children have questions about their beginnings. For adopted children and their families, these questions are not always easily answered. Most children adopted from China are faced with the additional difficulty that there are no facts available about their birth and early life. Before I Met You is meant to be shared with children adopted from China. It addresses the difficult issues of the “one-child policy” and abandonment in a sensitive, child-appropriate manner. Just as important, it explores the many feelings that adoptees generally experience when they think about their own history, and serves as a beginning that parents can use to discuss and validate the child’s feelings. Here is one mother’s view and use of this book… “Before I Met You has given me the tools I need to talk about my daughters’ beginnings with them. The book’s balance between guessing what might have happened in their early lives and admitting that we really don’t know is handled with delicacy and openness. The focus on feelings has given us a starting point for family discussions about all of the feelings that adoption engenders, and a way of reassuring them that it’s normal and healthy to have and express those feelings.” (Marie Lowry, adoptive parent of two children.)All profits from the sale of my book will be donated to Families with Children from China National Appeal.

This is a story about a family that does not have material wealth but has something in life that possesses true meaning and everlasting results: love. Through the unconditional love of one another and the stories that were told by the fathers of each generation, it transformed a community where riches took on a whole new outlook. Sometimes we do not realize what is really important in life until we lose it. During times like these, where many are looking and wishing for things they believe will sustain and bring them everlasting joy, it is not until the things we thought were important, disappear. We are suddenly faced with a new awakening. Maybe, it is not a wish after all because we come to realize we had it all along the way . . . .

Although my story is reminiscent of the Great Depression years, it could happen at any time when the economy is fragile. This story tells about a young boy and his family who encountered this situation and were forced to live in poverty. The young boy faced these hardships and learned how to overcome them.Being an artist has helped me not only to bring images onto my canvas but also to the written word. I have been an artist all of my life, but I also love music and play in a community concert band. I have concentrated on my art more than anything and have received many awards, including three national first place prizes for the Daughters of the American Revolution.Even though writing has not been my forte, I have been able to read my poems and short stories before an audience where they have been well received.I live in a rural area where my husband and I reared seven children. We have given homes to numerous stray cats that blended in with children and dogs. So it seems natural that I use animals for my subjects in both art and writing.
