From the day I found out that my mammogram was abnormal until the day I found out I was finally cancer free, I was never prepared for the 1 ½ years experiences that I would go through. I was not prepared for needle biopsies, mammograms, ultra sounds, lumpectomy, radiation therapy and the emotions that I felt. Every emotion that one can experience I did in the 1 ½ years: sadness, fear, anger, impatience, laughter, joy, compassion for others. And, I almost froze to death through it all. Until I found the “gown”. The gown with the long sleeves. The gown that kept me warm and gave me some control of much I had no control of.

It is in the newspapers, magazines, on talk radio, and on television every day: America's culture war between the church and homosexuals. Advocates for homosexual "rights" have moved well beyond their early stated goal of "freedom of sexual expression" for gays and lesbians, to new demands for total legal equality and moral acceptance of homosexuals by all Americans. In recent years, this culture war moved off the streets and into the pews and pulpits of mainline Christian denominations. It now threatens to fracture some denominations, and may lead the Federal courts to step into the pulpits, and force pastors and ministers to marry gay and lesbian couples or face being in contempt of the U.S. Constitution. How did we get here? And how should the church respond to those who say homosexuals belong in the church? Frederick Osborn has personal observations on both sides of this culture war, and brings a unique perspective to the debate in The Church Vs. Homosexuals.

Wilson’s Disease for the Patient and Family: A Patients Guide to Wilson’s disease and Frequently asked Questions about Copper, is an essential reference book for patients with Wilson’s disease and their families. In easy-to-understand language, Dr. Brewer, a world authority on Wilson’s disease and copper, explains everything about Wilson’s disease, from its genetic cause and mechanism of transmission, to effective treatment plans. A comprehensive glossary provides readers with definitions and explanations for many of the scientific words and phrases used in the text. Major reasons why this book is important to patients relate to the rarity of the disease, variation in its manner of presentation, and the likelihood that doctors consulted about the medical problems will know very little about Wilson’s disease. Most doctors, even specialists in liver disease or neurology, will see at most one or two cases during their entire medical careers. If patients hope for rapid and early diagnosis, and that is important to preserve as much function as possible, they may need to help the doctor think of the disease in the first place, and help in sorting out what constitutes proper diagnosis. And then, if there is a diagnosis, comes treatment. The days are gone when one drug, penicillamine (the only anticopper drug most doctors have heard of), is prescribed as soon as the diagnosis is made. Now we have different therapies for different stages. In fact, we no longer recommend penicillamine for Wilson’s disease at all. This book will guide the patient and family through all of these various aspects of Wilson’s disease. Dr. Brewer begins by describing Wilson’s disease, what causes it, how it is inherited, and what symptoms people with Wilson’s disease exhibit. It is an inherited disorder of copper accumulation and toxicity, affecting one in 40,000 people worldwide. After basic coverage of Wilson’s disease, Dr. Brewer devotes an entire chapter to answering some of the most commonly asked questions about copper. Many of these questions are unrelated to Wilson’s disease, but are questions frequently asked by other types of patients as they are informed that there is “something wrong with their copper.” After that, Dr. Brewer explores the symptoms which should trigger the suspicion of Wilson’s disease, and what screening tests can be done to explore this possibility. He then covers testing which will give a definitive diagnosis, what the results of different tests mean, and some of the possible problems with various tests which might be performed. Once a reliable diagnosis of Wilson’s disease is made, anticopper therapy is essential to the survival of Wilson’s disease patients. Dr. Brewer explains what drugs are available for treatment of Wilson’s disease, and offers a comparison of their benefits and side effects. He elaborates on variations in treatment, first discussing the initial stage of treatment, and then long-term maintenance therapy. Included in the discussion are tips for treatment of children and pregnant women. The risks and long-term outlook for a person diagnosed with Wilson’s disease are discussed in some detail. After these information-packed chapters, Dr. Brewer devotes a chapter to answering some frequently asked questions about Wilson’s disease, and presents resources available to Wilson’s disease patients and their families. The book concludes as Dr. Brewer examines the current shortcomings in Wilson’s disease therapy, and points to areas which might be improved upon in the future.

Still Here! Taking Charge of Your Health Care delivers the reader from the fear and anxiety associated with cancer and our complex medical system. Drawing on her own extraordinary 10 year battle with breast cancer, the author illustrates both why and how patients can become more actively involved in managing their own healthcare. Also covered are related topics such as insurance concerns, how the medical environment affects patient care, emerging cancer therapies, and what friends and family can do to help. The book is an inspiring story of survival and a valuable tool for anyone facing cancer or serious illness.

Quotes from readers of this book:
“As a long-term breast cancer survivor, reading this book has opened a window to healing. I applaud the candor and wealth of practical advice. This book is a gift to anyone with cancer and to those who care for us: our family, friends, physicians, nurses and technicians need to read what is written here. This has been such a lonely journey; now I am no longer so alone.”
–Barbara Lazarus, former Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, Carnegie Mellon

“Hearing the word “cancer” causes the world to forever change, the lights dim, color evaporates, sounds cease. Reading this book helped us to get past unknowns, to organize—it was as though we suddenly found footsteps to follow while standing in a blizzard of snow.”
–Jody Sartori (lung cancer patient) and Mark Stahl

“Joan Schreiner provides a unique and powerful guide to the patient diagnosed with cancer. She allows the patient the dignity and wherewithal to work alongside the physician to control the disease and its course. This book “tops the list” of what to turn to first when diagnosed with cancer.”
–Dr. Lucy Shapiro, Director, Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine, Stanford University

“My diagnosis left me stripped and without hope. Still Here! was my lifeline. It gave me the strength to get out of bed, take back control of my health, get a new doctor, and focus on wellness. Thank you for sharing your courage.”
–Millie Chambers (lung cancer patient).
