The incidence of stroke increases with age and with the increase in the life expectancy, the older people will contribute to a large portion of those afflicted with stroke. Stroke and Stroke related disorders in the Elderly begins with a historical review of stroke and its management followed by an overview of the anatomy and functions of the brain. Detailed knowledge of which is mandatory and essential for the proper understanding of what happens to a patient with a stroke and for interpretation of xray images of the brain. It then considers the pathophysiology as our knowledge of neuronal death continues to evolve. Clinical manifestations, the evaluation and management are then dealt with in full. Stroke- related disorders such as transient ischaemic attack and carotid artery disease are included. The book also provides essential information on poststroke neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioural disorders and poststroke complications such as cognitive impairment, falls, seizures, urinary incontinence and central stroke pain that may hinder or delay stroke recovery. Many sections follow a common pattern with headings and subheadings. The text offers the primary care physician, junior hospital doctors, medical undergaduates and specialist nurses a systematic approach to stroke in the elderly. The intent also is to provide extreme information where interest demands in those areas, extending the aims and scope of the book to pathology and pharmacology and beyond.
KEY FEATURES Contributes to the understanding of the pathophysiology of stroke Presents an insight into the clinical manifestations and their evaluation and management Describes the neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioural consequences of stroke

There’s a revolution going on, one that is slowly creeping into the psyche of the American experience; one that is not about money, political ideals, social justice or power. This is an internal revolution driven by a biological clock. We’re not willing to settle for the ticking away of life. We’re not content to sit by while our bodies shrivel, our minds forget, and our sexual potency is lost. WE WANT TO STAY YOUNG FOREVER! This revolution is in the spirit of Life. It is the Life Force that makes us what we are, and our reactions that give our inner selves feelings of action, exuberance, and ecstasy. We Baby Boomers have seen our grandparents rock away their lives in rocking chairs, our parents vegetate before the T.V. We’ve seen them turn old, way before their time. We’ve seen them become incapacitated, relegated to nursing homes, and suffer massive infections due to bed sores, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic ailments that rob them of the essence of Life.We Baby Boomers say, NO! There must be a better way to live when we’re old.And there is. SEVEN SECRETS OF ANTI-AGING explores the options available that are known to increase life, vitality, memory, and mobility, and avoid many of the pitfalls associated with aging. There has been an explosion of knowledge and interest in anti-aging. This book encapsulates this knowledge in simple terms easily understood by the layperson. You can read this book in depth or you can skim it over to get the most essential ideas. On whatever level you read SEVEN SECRETS OF ANTI-AGING, you will gain from it and become a healthier individual, avoiding many of the pitfalls that devoured our parents and grandparents as they aged. We pamper our pets, we pamper our cars, we pamper our boats but why have we abused our bodies? In the first half of our lives our bodies take care of us but in the second half of our lives we have to take care of our bodies. We have to take care of our bodies just as we take care of all of our other possessions. If we take care of our bodies and mind, they will give us good service and pleasure in life. You can do it at any stage of your life; the body is very resilient and can repair itself as outlined in this book. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful machine working for us, nursing us along through all the abuses we throw at it but there is a limit to how much abuse the body can stand. Find out what you can do now to stop abusing your own body and start nurturing it towards perfect health. The SEVEN SECRETS OF ANTI-AGING book gives you a logical, easy to understand system of changes you can make that will reverse that aging process as much as possible. When you take control of your biological clock, you realize that anti-aging is a reality and that you can have a healthy, happy, active last half of your life without physical or mental impediments. If you implement just one of the SEVEN SECRETS you will have great anti-aging benefits, but when you stack them together watch out! Your energy level will go through the roof and you will feel forty again. As you read the key features of this book, you will realize anti-aging requires some effort. Anti-aging requires some planning. Anti-aging can be a whole bunch of fun because the rewards are tangible. You can feel the rewards. You can feel yourself staying younger, becoming younger, losing weight, having more energy and being mentally sharp. You can feel yourself developing a zest for life, a quest for knowledge, increased sexual desire, greater muscle strength, greater physical endurance, and an overall peace of mind and happiness with love and passion for what you are doing. If you follow the anti-aging program, you will be a better spouse and a better friend. You may not be a burden on your children. You will lead an active life exploring the wonders of the world, being an asset to society and helping other people. Time will just fly because you are having so much fun. A patient once told me, "I had no idea I'd be having so much fun and enjoying life as much as I am now that I am retired." How many of you can say that? If you follow this program, you will be saying that. You will say, "Dr. Lenhart, this is fantastic. I never knew I could have so much energy and zest for life. I feel younger now than I did when I was forty." We start the book with detoxification. It’s up to you to do spring cleaning in your body. Get rid of those thousands of toxins that can impede your health before you start building it up. This book gives you solid ideas of how to do it. The next section we talk about is caloric restriction. The basic data out there show big fat is making us very sick. By reducing the amount of food we eat, we can increase our life span by about one-third based upon animal studies. We can also reduce disease, increase mobility and virility by restriction caloric intake. We also talk a great deal about physical activity and exercise. Physical activity has been shown to be one of the most potent anti-aging things you can do. Not only will it increase your muscle tone and stamina, but it will also strengthen your bones, increase growth hormone levels, and increase the oxygenation to your brain promoting brain growth factor activation resulting in preservation and enhancement of your brain cells. That’s a lot of benefit for just walking two miles or more a day at about a 3 to 4 mph pace, isn't it? So, what's holding you back? Go out and do it. Just do it. The gravy section of this book explains the need for specific anti-aging vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and herbs. All those things are very nice. They will help you. But they are like the icing on the cake. They are sweet, they are decorative, and they sort of round the whole thing out. They prevent free radical damage to your cells. They build you up nutritionally and give you good raw material so you can build a solid house that resists diseases and allows you to bounce back rapidly from any illness. Read about the specific nutrients that do make a difference and may some day greatly enhance your immune system. In the fifth secret I talk about hormone replacement. We know that growth hormone is very potent in reversing the symptoms of aging, such as excess fat deposition, overall appearance, energy, and stamina. There is a list of benefits we derive from growth hormone, as well as other hormones, such as testosterone or estriol. Growth hormone can be activated by physical activity. You do not even have to take it externally. Phytoestrogens can be gotten through soy products. So, there are natural options available to stimulate hormones. You may also consider taking them through external dermal patches or amino acid packets that stimulate your own body to produce more growth hormone. Find out how various hormones interact and are needed in your anti-aging program. The sixth secret of anti-aging is fruits, vegetables, and dietary choices. What we put in our body is what we get out of our body. Garbage in, garbage out. If you feed your body nutrient poor food that is loaded with carbohydrates, sugars, and additives, you are going to get not only sub-optimum performance, you are going to have a disease-ridden performance and an emaciated, pale-looking body that falls over with the first virus or bacteria that comes around and gets gobbled up. But, if you give your body healthy nutrient-rich foods that are loaded with minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins, your body will be like a strong palm tree that can weather any hurricane that comes by, clinging onto the sand, bending in the wind, resilient and standing strong. The choice is yours, find out what you need to do in this chapter. The final secret of anti-aging ? happy thoughts and the anti-aging mind ? does not cost you anything. It is all in your mind, your willingness to change your environment, reduce stress, constantly challenge your mind, and hang around positive people. Be happy and have lots and lots and l

Socorro Arce Noyola “Angel at Work” Thirty days before her flight to Jesus in Heaven, Socorro Arce Noyola endorsed her social security check and allotted monthly payments to be made. She taught her family to work, pay our way, and always serve Jesus. In her extended mission of life were many trips to places many people will never see. Her life became an extension of her mission as an anchor of the Christ to family and friends. When the ill anchor weighted heavily, we helped to raise her up. When the heavy anchor dropped, she thrust her eager soul skyward and embraced Jesus. Now with each heartbeat we too are working towards her to see her at work once again with Jesus. Hurry heart, hurry.

As the number of old persons increases dramatically, information is the one thing both the young who are trying to take care of the old and the elderly who are trying to take care of themselves need to assuage concerns and solve problems that advancing years bring. Like their young counterparts, the old know shockingly little about care and upkeep, not only of the automobile, but – more important – of the human body. Aging: An Encyclopedia concretely and accurately summarizes the latest research in geriatrics and gerontology while presenting strategies for adding years to your life and life to your years. Not just basic questions are answered, such as those involving the onset of cancer, but also seemingly peripheral ones, such as descriptions of government and non-profit agencies that can be reached for information and help. Included are practical aids, such as checklists for choosing a nursing home, a doctor, a financial planner. Theory and application are kept separate. Avoided are false hopes and sensationalism too often found in news coverage of aging. Only solutions to problems of aging which are medically sound and applicable to everyday life are dealt with. This volume does not pretend to state or to answer every question that at present can be raised concerning aging. There is no attempt at simple solutions to complex problems. The intention is that enough information be included to support and exemplify statements made. Although I am immensely indebted to the many researchers upon whose work I have leaned so heavily, there are few footnotes, acknowledgements and attributions in the text, for the attempt here is to bring out essentials clearly without scholarly encumbrances, such as raised numbers trailed by sets of dots. A guidebook, this volume is easy to use and small enough to be carried everywhere. The format is designed as a reference to be consulted for particular concerns. Essays are organized in more than 80 topics arranged alphabetically. Entries are self-contained, so that a reader can start anywhere. Where it is possible to retain accuracy, language familiar to lay people has been substituted for scientific jargon. Technical terms are explained in the glossary at the end of the volume. For more in-depth information, articles and books are cited in the bibliography and in particular areas although it is wise to remember that publishers and organizations are continually revising or bringing out new writings to reflect research with the most recent data and discoveries.
