NATURE - Marine Life

Sort By: Products per Page:
By Douglas Faulkner

Well known underwater photographer and writer, Douglas Faulkner, was born on October 13 1937. At age five he went to Florida with his parents, and took his first swim in the ocean with his father. At fourteen he SCUBA dived off the Florida Keys. In 1962 he took his first underwater photograph. Out of his efforts have come six books, among them, The Hidden Sea, This Living Reef, Dwellers In The Sea and Living Corals. Photographer, Ernst Haas wrote: “Faulkner is our only Orpheus who brings back songs from the underworld.”

Douglas Faulkner never studied photography formally. Rather his chosen course of study was literature and creative writing at the University of Miami. So it is not surprising that he has at least co-authored most of his books on marine life.

His latest book, Sunday Afternoon A Day Of Rest was written in the Solomon Islands when a bout of manic depression overcame him. It was a book he had wanted to write for several years, an autobiographical slice of his life. It was an easy book for him to write (in stream of consciousness) in barely a week’s time, but he knew it would take courage to share this self-revealing diary with the world.

Most writers who want to share their deepest hopes and fears, and flaws with other people most often choose the novel to lay a veneer over their identity and the identity of those other characters populating their lives. One could say that Sunday Afternoon A Day Of Rest is an autobiographical novel because it is not a biography in the Point A to Point Z sense of the word. Faulkner’s appoach allows his friends and loved ones to be themselves and to speak for themselves without censorship. Faulkner allows himself the same freedom of thought and speech. And for this reason the book may be deemed too

What Lies Beneath The Ocean? “A spellbinding ecosystem awaiting discovery”, says author, diver, and underwater photographer Maria Di Paolo-Greer. Life underwater is much like the life above. There are cities built upon strong sturdy foundations and habitants of all kinds living within them. Underwater, the foundations are coral reefs and the habitants include fish, marine mammals, nudibranchs, sea stars, crinoids, and reptiles to name a few. Watching these marine animals in a natural environment built thousands of years ago, is both fascinating and intriguing. The ecosystem’s complex nature and fine-tuned balance are what lure Ms. Di Paolo-Greer into its realm as often as possible, with her underwater camera system always ready. “To breath underwater, completely suspended, is an adventure of its own. To interact with ocean life in its natural habitat is a great privilege not experienced by many.” says Ms. Di Paolo-Greer.

Since experiencing the underwater world off the coast of Fiji in 1999, Ms. Di Paolo-Greer has aspired to capture the ocean’s life force via photography, and share its mysteries with divers and non-divers. “Since photographing the underwater realm in 1999, I have realized that everyone is interested in understanding what lies beneath the sea,” Ms. Di Paolo-Greer says. “No matter the person’s age, gender, or interests... what lies beneath the sea seems to fascinate everyone who comes across my photographs.”

With the support of her three dive buddies, and a goal of sharing the underwater mysteries with readers throughout the world, she published her first picture book, “A Delicate Balance: The South Pacific". “A Delicate Balance: The South Pacific” is over 150 pages of colorful underwater photographs, researched facts, and entertaining narratives. It takes the readers on a journey to the primitive reaches and depths of the tropical South Pacific. “The photographs provide a glimpse into the ocean’s soul.”, says Ms. Di Paolo-Greer.
