Earth Journal was written by the author in the summer of 1972 at age 21. Only a few ending pages, a few updates and corrections; the biography of Sir Thomas More; including the images, were added in May 2010. This non-fiction account is both a commentary on planet earth; a brief history of its age; its place in the solar system as being unique by possessing life; and a brief account of the first "Earth Day," as it happened from my 1970 perspective as a college freshman. The book is also a collection of aphorisms, poems, humor, and observations, creating a unique backward glance at 1972,, and my youthful thoughts and opinions. However, the book has been formulated to honor Sir Thomas More, my world famous 15th great grandfather. A collection of public domain photos and a short biography of this great man, a Saint in the Catholic and Anglican Churches, and truly, "A man for all seasons," has been added. As the author combines his 1972 writings with the photographs and biography of Sir Thomas More, Mr. Bly celebrates both earth and More as unique entities- one a planet; and the other, a man who gave up his life on earth to oppose the King of England, on moral grounds, This book is a one-of-a-kind creation, it's non-fiction qualities blended with biography, as well as artistic and spiritual discussions. Though challenging in thought, it's a book to be enjoyed for its humor and wit, as well.

Clara Stewart Stevenson, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, is a graduate of Peirce Business College in Philadelphia and was, for a time, employed by the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education. Later, she was the Home Service Director of the Gloucester County New Jersey Chapter of the American Red Cross before working for several years at the General Offices of the Campbell Soup Company in Camden, NJ. Her grandfather, who lived in Woodstown in the late eighteen-hundreds and early nineteen-hundreds, traveled to lumber camps throughout the country to contract for lumber mills. Her own dream, long-deferred, was to write. She lives in southern New Jersey as she always has and is the author of The New Minister; The Devil’s Booth; Bits and Pieces; and Dreams and Desires as well as several children’s picture books including Osborne, the Literary Mouse, and Osborne’s World. Her next picture book will be Bethany Louise says Goodbye...and Hello.

This is a tree book unlike any other.

While trees have long been celebrated, their widespread admiration usually produces those field guides we all know, describing habitat, form, leaf and bark, meant to be carried with us as we wander the fields and woods, or, more rarely, those handsome books dedicated to arboreal beauty and character, such as those of Thomas Pakenham filled with fine photographs of extraordinary specimens. Absent from the literature of trees, however, is a survey of those that have been created by and exist only in the human imagination. These are the truly remarkable ones, including one that is the source of life, another the source of the knowledge of good and evil; some that have a human ancestry, others human characteristics; one that is soundless, another that speaks of the future, and still another that encompasses the entire world. That we cannot touch their bark, clasp their trunks or see their foliage and fruit only addes to their appeal, for they exist only in our minds.

Gathered here are some of these extraordinary artifacts of the imagination produced, during man's long journey from the far past to the present, on the real trees that have sheltered and nourished us, physically and intellectually, enabled us to cross the oceans and both warmed and inspired us. That a mystical, atabistic bond exists between us and these aristocrats of the vegetable kingdom is evidenced whenever we stroll under a redwood or yew or enter a forest.

This is a field in which you know more than you think you do. The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil are obvious examples. Mythology provides us with Yggdrasil, the Norse world tree and the arboreal metamorphoses described by Ovid. Other specimens have roots in literature, philosophy, history, and folklore, and, as befits a new guide to imaginary beings, there are several that have only just been discovered.
