Over Fifty Years of Unconditional Love Author Diane Fontes Allen shares her memorable experiences of her beloved pets Norwood, MA – (November 7, 2006) – A woman’s great love for her pets has resulted into a memorable compilation of poetry and photos as she recalls each first encounter. Author Diane Fontes Allen invites readers and pet lovers to reminisce with her and her beloved pets in her picture book Fifty Years of Unconditional Love: And More…
Pets are a joy to behold with their antics and sometimes, just their company. The author is an avid animal lover and has collected a variety of pets over fifty years. She shares her amusing and sometimes sad experiences with her pets through the poems and pictures dedicated to her beloved animals who gave her so much love. In Fifty Years of Unconditional Love, Allen recounts each pet that came into her life, those that stayed even for a brief moment, those that passed on and those that are still with her today. She pays tribute to her pets through poems as she tells each wonderful experience with them.
Diane Fontes Allen is truly a remarkable woman with an equally remarkable love for animals. She works hard to provide pets she couldn’t keep with loving homes and leaves food on her porch for hungry pets who come to visit. She just can’t turn away a lost or homeless animal particularly those that are maltreated and malnourished. She nurses them back to health and adopts them, making them part of her growing family. She also gives away some pets to deserving owners that would provide them a loving home. This book is a testimony of her great unconditional love for her pets. Readers and pet lovers alike will find this an interesting read, sprinkled with amusing experiences of a variety of lovable pets.
About the Author Born seventy-seven years ago Diane Fontes Allen grew up with always a dog and cat in the family as well as spending her youth on her grandmother’s farm. She learned at a very young age that she had a love for all animals. When she was newly married, her animals became part of her everyday life and she has never been without three to seven pets in her home at a time. Because of her work taking her many miles from home, she always found lost or abandoned animals, kept some and found homes for others. Today she still works, has three cats, and many hobbies: gardening, crocheting, playing the organ, performing and singing, writing spiritual poetry and songs. She is now writing her memoirs of her days in show business.

Cats are wonderful as we all know, with a mostinteresting historical background. They are great pets and intelligent friends and also excellent entertainers!
William Gregg portrays them in a tremendously exuberant way with humor. The eyes say so much, and Gregg captures cats expressing life.

From hypothesizing about the origins of the Human Animal Bond and how the first animals became domesticated, to defining the bond and ultimately enumerating the many ways in which animals benefit society, the opening of this work commands one’s complete attention. Just as all pet owners become intrigued by the rapid physical growth of a puppy or kitten, the author reminds them to not only be witness to the physical nature of this process but to become attune to the more subtle changes that occur. These changes are primarily rooted in the animal’s sensitivities. Having set the stage for these awe inspiring feelings, she embarks on a most emotional yet at times humorous memoir of her departed Golden Retriever, Ruff and his sibling and littermate, Tumble. The exploits of these animals, together with their adopted feline sister will have the reader experiencing the heights of laughter together with the depths of grief. It is a remarkable roller coaster of emotion that rings so true in its parallels to everyday life. The poetic prowess of her husband, AD, is obvious in the two pieces he authors within the book. The final chapter of the book deals with the seriousness of loss for individuals. Whether the loss is a pet or person, the coping methodologies are similar. The discussion of souls, the levels of love and the enduring bonds provides a venue to release grief, to be open to afterlife communications and to realize that some things last forever. This profound conclusion applies to both humans and animals alike, with minimal changes. Readers will find this book therapeutic in terms of dealing with the raw pain and emotion following a loss in their family. For this is the very reason that the author wrote this work, that is to bring healing to those in need.

The Cat Who Read the Mail sixteen amazing stories about our mysterious bond with animals
Can a dog understand the grief and loss of 9/11? Can a cat expose a cheating husband? Can a research dog let his rescuer know he wants to be called “Rexy”?
Absolutely! And here are the stories to prove it. These are accounts of extraordinary interactions between people and pets. Stories that surprise, perplex and move us.
But The Cat Who Read the Mail is not simply another collection of “amazing” animal stories. Instead, animal writer and columnist Elinor Donahue explores the interaction between people and pets when it moves beyond amazing and becomes inexplicable, mysterious, profound. She’s interviewed dozens of ordinary people who have anything but ordinary stories to tell. Here, told in a lively, journalistic style, are the most compelling encounters with the unexpected through an animal.
Samson the cat began chewing and ripping the mail – selecting only the mail addressed to the husband of the house. He’d then deposit the remains at the front door where the wife would see it when she came home. Samson was on to something.
Annie, the 12-pound therapy dog at Ground Zero, gathered the gazes of a circle of bereaved men a few days after 9/11 – whereupon each of them spilled out, one by one, whom they lost there. “My mother.” “My brother.” “My sister.”
When Malibu the dog died, her housemate cat, Whip, watched in fascination -- and the next day took on Malibu’s daily habits, including opening the kitchen cabinets to forage for dog treats.
While each story in this entertaining and fast-reading book stands on its own, the narratives gather momentum as a collection, suggesting there is more mystery and meaning here than our limited vantage can account for. However, Donahue does not attempt to explain or interpret. She simply showcases these special pets and the ordinary people who have glimpsed the extraordinary because of them.
The Cat Who Read the Mail offers 16 stories that, in quick and glancing style, suggest that animals are in on the play of the universe in ways beyond our imagining. Still, each episode is real and occurred in the ordinary life of a grounded human being. The people in these stories never expected or sought the unexplainable event they experienced. Donahue has interviewed each of these individuals in depth, selecting the most compelling stories. Like Joel, the optometrist who dealt only in rational fact. He wasn’t expecting that an eerie howl from the cat would precede the apparition of Baxter, his recently deceased dog. And a renowned dog trainer found that indeed it matters what you call your dog. When it hears the name it really wants, like “Jazz,” the animal will respond far more readily than when the moniker is a misfit, like “Daisy.”
Though not sentimental heart warmers, these are stories for the good. That is their power. These occurrences can’t be explained–and because of that they make their way into the crevices in our thinking. They take us to the moment of inswept breath–the aha! that catches us unaware.
And they’re fun to read!
