Humans have been interacting intimately with our mammalian cousins for tens of thousands of years. Provided the animals do not suffer, with both humans and animals benefiting through quality of life, social interaction and mental stimulation, there is no reason why different mammals should not help us, and us them. Improvements in their living conditions or their teaching often only need innovation and thought.

This book aims to help improve all aspects of the life of non-human mammals and their owners. Animal welfare science in combination with learning theory and critically assessed practical knowledge gives insight to this end. The philosophical and scientific arguments are given in a simple, non-jargonised form. We present the foundations of Cooperative Teaching and give practical guidance, with a variety of mammalian species in mind. Whether you care for or work with animals as a pet owner, equestrian competitor, veterinarian, zoo keeper, farmer, animal trainer or conservationist, there is something for you in this book.

Up through the early 1980’s local horseback riders could ride through the many farm fields, pastures, and undeveloped countryside of northern Illinois and Wisconsin, and not get caught up by the excessive fencing, housing developments, strip malls, and endless ribbons of asphalt roads you see there today. Large horse farms dotted the landscape and expanses of open land beckoned riders to experience a little of what this country must have been like on horseback in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. This book is a collection of true stories about me and the local tribe of horsemen and horsewomen I belonged to. The stories tell of our adventures, our challenges and our day to day lives as riders in the Fox River Valley in the 1960’s, 70’s, and early 80’s.

Throughout the pages, the author explains what draws humans to horses is the representation of beauty and freedom. Most of this compatibility comes from the horse’s flexibility in joining with humans as partners. This material prompts the human to evaluate the reasons why he has chosen the horses as companions or athletic partners or why he has chosen to breed them.“This book is written with the hope that the knowledge I have acquired these many years will be helpful to create new lines of communication with our partners, the horse” she shares. With more than ten eye-opening chapters, Horses And Humans - The Real Connection is not a training manual, but moreover to open the lines communication”. The book discusses choosing a horse that is right for each individual, according to that person’s personality and that of the horse they choose, the horse and its psyche, humans and their psyche, trainers and instructors, diagnostics and therapies, including homeopathic, holistic and conventional treatments, the art of lunging, classic principles of all riding techniques, equipment, and more.

This book is written for the inexperienced, amateur, and professional riders as well. The author finds many proposed “trainers” are lacking in the fundamentals of understanding people and horses; particularly the psychological and physical connections that need to be established and understood.
