The Mind-Body Problem Examined

The mystery of consciousness and its relationship to the mind and the material world remains a philosophical enigma. This book is a comprehensive review of the thoughts and research devoted to this problem over the last century and offers the sometimes surprising views of psychologist/philosopher Merle Turner.

Written over a period of fifteen years, The Mind-Body Problem: Knot or Not? is the latest word on the identity theory--that mind and body are one. The ontological problem--reality of mind and body; the epistemic problem--interaction of the body and mind; and the methodological problem--relation of knowledge of the mind to the brain are all thoroughly explained. His audience is not limited to professionals. Any concerned lay person or student can follow the arguments. In short, this book offers a brilliant, lucid examination of consciousness and of how the divide between mind and brain can be bridged without denying the reality of either.

There is consequential movement in the scholarly literature toward nothing less than arevolution in science. Many leading researchers have recognized that new approaches to quantum physics and consciousness provide a basis for understanding parapsychology. This book provides a thorough exploration of this profound paradigm shift in modern science.

BOOK REVIEW

BookNews, Inc.
Since Newton first described his fundamental principles of physics, some kind of mechanization has been implied in the laws of physics. It is this mechanization that is being scrutinized by work at the forefront of quantum physics and brain science. There is now research, coming from several disciplines, that collectively forms a new holonomic paradigm in science. At the heart of this is an old idea regarding nonlocal hidden variables in quantum theory and new work on quantum coherence within living organisms. The latter provides a basis for integrating consciousness into physics, which is the basis of the book. Some researchers have also put forward the idea that new approaches to quantum physics and consciousness can provide the basis for understanding parapsychology. In this book data from several disciplines are brought together to describe this new view of science.

There is a conclusive point to all of our lives when ignorance ceases and wisdom prevails. This is said to be the dawning of enlightenment. It is happening everyday across the nation. This story is a prime example. Beginning with a man named Kamunda Halassi, as he sat listening to his employer gabble about the crimes against humanity and have such joy about it, he realized she wasn't the only person who enjoyed drama. He thought it was his fault because as an anchor man, he captured millions of hearts with death and destruction. When this realization hit home, it worried him. He then decided to give something to the world that could change people. It was his son, Monsoguthra. In doing so, Kamunda prepared his son's mind, body, and soul with knowledge--enough that Monsoguthra would ask the same question he asked: What's the most important aspect of life? As it was with him, Kamunda pressed him to find his own answer by engaging life. He did and combined his own wisdom with his father's knowledge. This became a spectacle in the Halassi family. So aspiring that Monsoguthra decided to keep the genetic knowledge flowing forward.

The Interactions Between Instinct and Intellect and its Impact on Human Behavior
Length: 286 Pages

I argue that human affairs divide into the two categories of serious affairs and fun affairs. The pleasure seeking aspect of humanity mostly revolves around fun, compassion, amazement and amusement, and sexuality that together constitute humans’ Playful Mind, covered in this book. As Shakespeare says, “to be human is to play.” Different instincts constantly precipitate varying human interests and energize all human emotions and compel them to interact. For example, the artists through their endless beautiful arts and athletes through their amazing athletic abilities purge life of boredom and render life endlessly joyous and pleasing. There are those who says, heaven belongs to mothers, but I say while that is true, it also belongs to great artists and athletes. However, without understanding what inner forces make these phenomena compellingly captivating for humans we will continue to enjoy them without properly understanding what it is that we so enjoy.

In that, humans have enjoyed arts and sports for millennia without being able to articulate exactly what in these seemingly frivolous activities so engrosses these superbly intelligent and purposeful beings, humans. Hence, we have been relishing that which we do not understand at all. To use another example in the realm of human sexuality, over 90% of both genders have sexual fantasies that create a unique brand of human psychology of its own. Yet the origin of this fascinating and universally prevalent human mental phenomenon is yet to be explained in a meaningful way. This study, The Interactions Between Instinct and Intellect and its Impact on Human Behavior, for the first time unveils all these and more of human mysteries and renders humans naked, so to speak.
