By Dr. Emmanuel O. Ojameruaye
The book is a collection of some articles the author wrote on the politics and economics of crude oil revenue and other topical national issues in Nigeria between April 2002 and July 2005 during his assignment in the United States. Most of the articles were posted on some Nigerian websites and some were published in Nigerian newspapers. The bulk of the articles book focus primarily on the political economy of the crude oil industry in Nigeria, particularly on the use and allocation of oil revenue and related issues. The articles are clustered into seven parts: the first five parts are on oil industry while last two parts are on governance and other regional and national issues. To provide background information, the appendix provides some basic information on Nigeria and the oil industry and some statistics on oil production, prices and revenue.

Do you have a right to “your” car, “your” house, or even to “your” life? Why? Because the government says you do? Suppose they change their minds? Wouldn’t it be better if you could prove that you have a right to your property, including your own body?

This book offers such a proof. The proof begins with the premise that people have free will. A “right” is defined as a valid claim to the use of a physical thing, and the author argues that free will implies that the first person to use an unclaimed physical thing acquires a right to that use. For example, we acquire rights to use our bodies when we first use them.

Rights are transferred to another person when the right-holder abandons his right and the other person claims it. Rights are violated when another person uses the same physical thing in a way that conflicts with our use.

Difficult questions are tackled in this book, such as: What rights can children acquire? Can we acquire rights to intellectual property? How can retribution against criminals be implied by free will? Does a judge violate rights if he sentences a defendant who is in fact innocent? And, do rights conflict with survival?

Leadership Qualities

President W. Bush is a compassionate conservative who goes a long way to show his love for his country and the people. He is a visionary leader who will go extra miles to protect the people and the economy of the United States. Previous administration taught the masses how to eat fish but W. Bush taught the masses how to catch fish. “Teach the people how to catch fish; you´ve taught them how to eat fish forever”. He is full of faith, grace, wisdom and innate power to succeed in all his endeavors. He is a great man; a man with great vision. He is an intelligent traveler who knows whence he came and whither he goes. He understands the span of life and makes it freer of obstacles and enjoyable because he understands all of its purposes and ways and uses it to the fullest.

W. Bush chose the side of the good. He stood for the truth, the right, and the devout interest of humanity, not only of the American people but also of the whole world at large. He does not just think of an individual but thinks of him as well in terms of the constructive, peaceful course it is wished he would follow. This, when successful, results in the individual´s being motivated to act in the very manner desired by those concentrating upon him. Further, the individual feels that these urges have sprung up within his consciousness. To him, they seem to be the consequences of his own thought; therefore, he offers no opposition.

George has a gift for leadership or management. He carries very heavy responsibilities. He maintains relationships. He recognizes and pursues a clearly defined goal or objective. He represent others and has a compelling force capable of moving those that are led. As a leader, he takes initiative to lead, direct and mobilizes. His leadership is responsible to the people whom he led.

Walker’s leadership qualities, especially in the area of taming terrorism, economy and national security led to positive results, realization of his goal of revamping the economy, productivity, positive development, dependability, mobilization, participation and motivation.

However, it suffices to say that his effective leadership is like a house built on a hilltop, which cannot be hidden. Bush effective leadership is self-evident in the result that it produces in the fight against terrorism. His administration created terror in the heart of the terrorist and destabilizes their net work all over the world.

Bush, as an effective leader, exhibits vision, personal integrity, commitment to hard work, sound knowledge and understanding, ability to think constructively and objectively, as well as balanced philosophy of life. It is in the light of the above that one can easily see why he continues to be successful. He has a real vision of life, and a decent philosophy of life to live by. He knows who he is, where he is coming from, what he is living for, where he is going from here and what he is expecting at the end of his earthly pilgrimage.

He is alert, has a discerning spirit, and is sensitive to the needs of the people. President Bush believes in the community. This community has rights, which belong to each individual and to the community as a whole. Each one is responsible to the other. This gave him the idealism, which was to mould his character. It was also the idealism which brought him into politic. It is, above all, this idealism which brought him to his chosen carrier.

This is the type of man he is; he took his tasks very seriously. His life has always been earnest. His opinions are steadfast. But to retain his sense of being, to keep his feeling of belonging, he has to refurbish his sense of humor. He is an extra-ordinary man, capable of tears almost as deeply as he is capable of laughter. The two go together in a sensitive personality. And Walker Bush is sensitive.

George is a man of many virtues. He wants people to work hard the same path he will tread - to forget hardships in the knowledge that the end is worth any effort, any sacrifice.

He is an optimist. Most great men are. But he knows that optimism is better than pessimism. One is positive, the other negative. One could achieve the object, which calls for great socio-political and cultural changes; the other could achieve only stagnation.

To this end he works; to this end he organizes his family and teams into a strong unit. This is an ideal, which is bound to succeed in America and the world at large. This man has started on a course from which no American Presidents and world leaders can ever again deviate. He is patient for progress, and progress is often slow. He hates inefficiency. And there is a great deal of inefficiency around him. He is naturally kind. He knows he possesses tremendous power and he wants to do well with his power, never evil. His patience drives him forward and he carries others with him at the same tremendous pace.

President Bush is a man with a dedicated purpose and he has never for once lost that sense of dedication. He creates in my mind, the image of a road laborer or bricklayer sweating hard to build. His, to my mind, is a personality of hard work, of the ruthlessness and crudity of a mason, building rough and tough bricks, digging rough and tough roads, and setting up a city on the rubbles of chaos and confusion. There is a huge packet of energy in his personality, a heavy weight brain for planning, downright realism and ruthlessness to push a job through.

In the political scene and fight against terrorism, Walker bestirs the entire milieu like an octopus — a brilliant politician and charismatic leader. He is a uniquely gifted leader and a peerless debater, always resourceful in the management of men, with a tremendous and rather unbelievable respect for the views of the less able members of his variegated lieutenants. His campaign exploits for the ‘presidential race’ in America and world peace are an epic story and are certainly matchless in terms of the resourceful use of physical and mental energies that any human being can exert.

He stands up defiant to the declining feudalism so much admired, built up, propped up and cultivated in America by Mediocre Leaders. And his consistent verbal sorties against the imposition of unrealistic economic and social polices by themselves constitute a searing indictment of a monstrous system and its near Gestapo tactics in America and the world at large. His sustained and life-long concern for the love of the common people in America and the world is a story of a friendship which transcends race or state boundaries, class and imperialism under a lingering vicious circle determined to keep them in perpetual subjugation as separate and unequal members of the same continent.

His brilliance as an intellectual coupled with his cold and consistent respect for principle and logic and his consuming love for personal discipline are like fairy tales. In this respect, he is simply head and shoulders high.

As a leader of the modern cast, he has left in America, standards, which are indelible, standards beside which future aspirants to the White House can be eternally measured. He is an American Leader that enunciates principles and plays down personalities. He is a brilliant administrator and a most erudite politician. He does not only identify himself wholly with the aspirations of the American people but he is also able to convince the people that he, only he epitomizes the highest point of their "social security" aspirations and consciousness. He is loved, he is feared, and above all, he belongs to the people he professes to lead. Americans have the singular honor of proposing for him this appellation that has endured— George Walker Bush ‘a unique President among American Presidents’.

By Malik Siraj Akbar
Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province rich with natural gas, gold and copper. Located on the borders of Iran and Afghanistan, land of the Balochs, where the first Baloch confederacy was founded in 1666, has had a bitter history of exploitation and suppression by a strictly centralized federal government heavily influenced by the country’s military. While the central government and the province confronted each other four times since the forceful annexation of the Baloch land into Pakistan in 1948, the ongoing movement entails more systematic and radical dimensions. Malik Siraj Akbar, editor of the The Baloch Hal, the first online English newspaper of Balochistan, takes a look at the last one decade how the dimensions of the Baloch movement changed. A Hubert Humphrey Fellow at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Malik reveals the “enforced disappearance” of hundreds of Baloch political workers and their brutal murder by the Pakistani security services under a “kill and dump” policy during detention in a phenomenon similar to Argentina’s Dirty War. The book analyzes growing state-sponsored radicalization in secular Balochistan. Malik is the most widely quoted journalist on Balochistan. He insists that the killing of former governor Nawab Akbar Bugti, 79, by Pervez Musharraf’s regime proved as the 9/11 of Pakistan’s relations with the resourceful province. The Balochistan question merits attention of the international community not only for a stable Pakistan but also to provide the world alternative options for a secular buffer state between Iran and Afghanistan if Pakistan falls in the hands of Islamists.
