This book was written for people who feel overwhelmed, confused, or simply “turned off” by all the conflicting dog training methods available to us today. There is so much information (created by people) on the subject that it is difficult to sort out who’s right, who’s wrong, what works, and what doesn’t work. I have designed this simple book to touch on the basic things that apply to all dogs and their owners because it’s not my way, it’s nature’s way—a sensible, universal place to start regardless of what kind of dog or puppy you have because it’s encoded in their genes.

As an educator, I enjoy teaching people how to live more balanced lives with their pets because I believe dogs are meant to be in our lives as stress reducers, not stress producers. People should have a pet to enjoy them, not to annoy them. If your dog is causing you stress, chances are you are doing the same to him. Who you are and how you interact on a daily basis with your dog will determine what kind of leadership style you represent and what kind of feedback your dog will give you in return.

Good Puppy Academics incorporates the science of the mind along with canine psychology to achieve a balance that enhances the human and canine partnership. You will discover how pain versus pleasure, problem-solving and having the no skill no kill mentality can help you to tap into your dog’s primal intelligence and train your dog more efficiently and humanely because it’s not my way, it’s nature’s way.

We had the honor to participate in Margie's Advanced Dog Training Classes to prepare Sammy to become a Service dog for my Husband Steve. Margie's expertise, and passion for the Dogs is beautifully demonstrated in her new Book. We highly recommend "Good Puppy Academics" to all Dog Owners. This is a wonderful Book for anyone who owns a Dog, and needs to learn or refresh their Training Skills.

This book is great for every dog owner, whether you are a new owner or a person who has had dogs all their lives. As the saying goes, every dog can learn new tricks. Great as a refresher if you haven't had a puppy for awhile, just wanting to learn something new or if you want some clarification of things you have heard; this book is worth the price and time it will take to read it.

I have trained with Margie and learned as much as my dog. I learned things that helped to create a willing and happy dog.

Great Book

It doesn't matter whether you are a raw, never had a puppy before trainer or someone who has had dogs all of their lives and has trained every one of them, this book will help you get the best results possible from the time you spend training your puppy.

As someone who trains her own mobility assistance dog, this book has given me better ways to train my next service dog. Margie just doesn't spit words out to fill a page, she puts years of experience, research and a love for dogs into each word, sentence and page. Great read for someone who wants to be a better more responsible owner.

My husband and I have had the privilege to work with Margie in training our dog Clara. She gave us great tools to become a happy well adjusted dog family. Margie is a very knowledgeable and passionate dog trainer who has a background in early childhood development which she has applied very effectively to understanding and training dogs. This book is a great read and has all the information to help one become a responsible pet owner.

The mental connection between Margie and her amazing dog, Jack, is palpable to anyone present, something I was able to experience during her class in Cotati in January of this year. The concepts explained in her book “Good Puppy Academics” are illustrated perfectly through their work together, and what I love is her belief that every dog has a purpose, if it is simply given the chance and resources to fulfill it.

Whether you are training a service dog, or simply in need of a well-behaved pet, Margie’s teachings are sure to not only simplify the sometimes stressful process of training, but also improve the life of both you and your canine pal. I highly recommend this book to anyone, or to check out her classes, especially if you have “tried everything” since it really is a fresh approach to understanding the mind of you dog.

I had the pleasure of not only reading Margie Cantwell’s “Good Puppy Academics” but also witnessing her in action at her class in Cotati a couple weeks ago. The mental connection between her and her Jack Rustle Terrier, Jack, is palpable when they communicate. Her belief and patience with her students (dogs and humans alike) make is possible to rectify seemingly impossible canine behavior. Whether you’re thinking of buying a new puppy, or have had one for a while, this book can help you select the right one for your lifestyle, or change the bad old habits of your current pal.
My absolute favorite insight in her book is the fact that because dogs still have un-domesticated genetics, they are so in tune with nature, and experiencing minutes as they occur. Because of this, having a dog in your life can greatly improve it, guiding your hectic life back to nature, and living for the moment.
