Desiring to serve his country as a soldier, he enlisted in the Army where he learned Russian and German and specialized in intelligence gathering. Based in Europe for most of his military career, Harris was Senior NCO at Checkpoint Alpha on the border between East and West Germany during the years leading up to the fall of the Soviet Union, and took down the flag when the border officially opened between East and West Germany.

After serving as rear detachment commander for deployed Military Police during Desert Storm, Harris returned stateside where he was Chief of Criminal Investigations at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. Upon his retirement in 1995, Harris was rated among the top 2% of Non-commissioned officers in the U.S. Army and is a proud member of the elite Sgt. Morales Club.
