The author was born Victor (Vic) Wayne Thacker, on July 6, 1950. He was the third son of Lonnie Astor and Melvina Fuller Thacker and had five brothers: Lonnie Jr., Donnie Sr., Dennis Harley, Jeffery Jay, and Darrell Boy. His dad said that his mom was so mad when she had the sixth son that she named him Boy. But his dad added Darrell. The author has two children, Tiffany Michelle (Belcher) Holliday and Chad Wayne Thacker, and four grandchildren: two granddaughters and two grandsons. He was born in Haysi, Virginia, and graduated from Palatka High School, Palatka, Florida. He graduated college from St. Johns River Community College, Palatka, Florida and entered the U.S. Navy at age eighteen. He served there for four years before going to college. He got married at age twenty-three. He became a police officer at twenty-five, then divorced at age of twenty-eight. Then he returned to the U.S. Navy at age thrity-one and retired in 1994. He worked at the Pentagon and served on five U.S. ships.
