1. Target audience This Arabic reader is suitable for both classroom teaching and home independent learning. Its main audience are European adult beginner learners or learners whose first language of instruction is English, who have a basic pre-requisite knowledge of the Arabic script: alphabet (sound and writing systems). Difficult words are explained and transliterated in the vocabulary section, using the standard Roman orthography (SRO) to facilitate independent learning.
2. Objectives of the reader The objectives of this reader are to: a) Consolidate the learner�s ability to recognise the Arabic alphabet in cursive script and produce the sounds with the help of the vocalisations; b) Develop the learners� ability to read short fully vocalised Arabic factual texts about key figures from the Arab World; c) Build gradually the learner�s vocabulary that will enable them to introduce themselves and their family members, with reference to origin, provenance, age, personal and social position An audio CD for the reading texts accompanies this reader.

Saadia Gamir-Shahin, a modern foreign languages lecturer, has been helping generations of language learners for decades: First, as a TEFL ad ESP Tutor in North Africa, then as an Arabic language and translation/interpreting lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Leeds. For the last 7 years, she has been working as a French and Arabic lecturer at the Carnegie Faculty of Leeds Metropolitan University, where she is particularly interested in using film as a means of developing language skills and cultural literacy and awareness. She is a member of FILTA (Film in Language Teaching Association). In addition to her lecturing commitments, she works as a freelance translator and interpreter. She has recently been invited by ISLinguists to take part in the User Acceptance Testing of an online interpreting/translating course developed by Leeds Metropolitan University and the BigWord, which is to be launched in September 2011. She also works in high schools as an EAL 1-1 tutor, helping pupils struggling with English.
