Daisy is the story of a pony that lived in a small enclosure in an alley behind tall city buildings. No one ever came to visit her, and she was very lonely. Nothing exciting ever happened, and her days were spent listening to the sounds of trucks beeping and honking and the train that ran on tracks at the end of the alley. One day, a man with a big straw hat arrived with a truck and loaded Daisy up in a trailer and took her to the country. The man put her in a large field, and Daisy missed the security of her small stall in the city. She was frightened by the strange sounds she heard and was approached by many creatures that lived in the field and the woods beyond. Daisy made many friends, and best of all, she was loved by her new owner, Amy. And her days were filled with new experiences and new friends.

The book “Ape Plays with His Father” was inspired by the author’s love for the game “hide and seek,” which she fondly plays with her older sisters, Shanice, Sydney, and Samara. The highlight of the book, where Apple saw Ape’s reflection in the mirror, was an idea that came about from the author’s love for science, and she actually learned this concept that same day, when she sat down to put her ideas on paper.

As children, our first inclination is to take the animals that we find in the wild and carry them home to see if our parents will allow us to keep them as our pets. So often we are told to return them to their familiar surroundings so they will have a normal life and a better chance for survival. Occasionally, we get a chance to keep them for a while. The lesson in Finding Tucker is to appreciate the short visit he paid and to view his departure as a way of accepting change in our lives. Then by letting the memories be sweet ones rather than sad ones, we learn to appreciate our natural surroundings and truly become guardians of the planet.
